Speaking with the prolific actor Roger Guenveur Smith on the campus of City College, I was able to understand in great detail his interpretation of many roles in which we’ve watched him hone his craft. Though best known for his roles in the films of director Spike Lee, his most memorable role for me was his Obie-award winning stage performance of The Huey P. Newton Story, a one-man show, and a role which took him to emotional depths we seldom see actors take. Roger, who wrote the play and performed it, has since acted in dozens of films and television shows in a variety of roles.
